To build or not to build?A row has erupted over plans to build a hotel in one of Manchester's liveliest neighbourhoods.

Bar owner Mark Cain wants to build a 20-bedroom hotel above his Velvet nightspot and restaurant in the Gay Village.  But some neighbouring bar owners have gathered a 3,000-name petition against it - they fear it could threaten their late licences, with hotel guests objecting to noise from their `after party' club nights.

Petition organiser, former Take That manager Nigel Martin-Smith, who runs Queer café bar, said opponents did not want to face calls to close down their party nights.

Sound-proofed
But Mr Cain said there would be no conflict - the sound-proofed Canal Street hotel would be aimed at club-goers, with a 4pm check-out for time to recover from hangovers.

Mr Martin-Smith, who also runs the Essential club night, said: "That end of Canal Street works for late night parties because there are no residents to complain. Our nights bring thousands of people to the area and we want to avoid a clash of interests."

The hotel would be on three floors above Velvet and Mr Cain said there was no reason why it should change anything.

He said: "This is going to be a fun hotel for the people enjoying the Village nightlife. The only noise that could affect guests would be from my own DJs."

Phil Burke, of the Village Business Association, said most people were behind the plans.
